If you have 88 minutes to spare this weekend, why not put Attack the Block on, mute the sound and sit back and enjoy some quality waffle from these guys?

Joe Cornish visited Toronto earlier in the week to pick up his award for best Best First Feature which was given to him by Toronto Film Critics’ Association for his directorial debut Attack the Block. As a co-writer of The Adventures of Tintin Joe also got to share TFCA’s award for Best Animated Feature.

Broadcasting House

Apparently, the people behind the BBC Radio 4 show Broadcasting House have named Joe Cornish the Cultural Figure of the Year for his work on his directorial debut Attack the Block and his co-writing work on Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin.

In an interview with Broadcasting House he commented working with Spielberg and the other Hollywood celebrities involved in Tintin like this:

“The problem for me when you’re in a room with people as famous as that is to remember you’re in the room, because it feels like you’re watching them on telly. And then to remember that it’s a dialogue not a monologue because you’re so used to just listening to their wisdom.

…

Then you’ve got to try not to ask them every single mad geeky question you’ve ever wanted to ask them and you do get a slight sense of bereavement when you leave their company and you leave that world, just because it feels very exciting and pleasurable on a very deep level.”

He also sent out the Black Squadron command human christmas tree on the Broadcasting House’s show, which resulted in a couple of responses displayed on the BH website.

Among the things Joe talked about in this video were how he wrote Attack the Block, what his thoughts on being a writer-director are and how important lighting was in the film.

I haven’t posted anything on this blog for a while now. Mostly because I’ve started to use my Twitter account (@JoeCornishNow) more and more recently.

But here’s an interview with Joe Cornish from the Locarna International Film Festival in Switzerland, where Joe showed Attack the Block earlier this month. In this interview Joe not only talks about his work on Attack the Block and Tintin, but he also mentions that Steven Spielberg has seen Attack the Block, and that Steven liked it! Watch at 10:05.

Joe Cornish is not only a great filmmaker and presenter, he can make some really funny songs aswell. This one is taken from Adam and Joe’s BBC 6 Music radio show feature Song Wars, from a show done in 2009, I think.

According to Box Office Mojo, Joe Cornish’s directorial debut will be released in U.S theaters on July 29th this year. The Sony Pictures subsidiary Screen Gems are in charge over the distribution of Attack the Block in the United States.

But Attack the Block will face some really strong competition at the box office that weekend. Also being released on the 29th are the action sci-fi film Cowboys & Aliens, starring Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig, and the romantic comedy Crazy Stupid Love, starring Steve Carell and Emma Stone.
