Joe Cornish, John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker on T4

Joe Cornish, John Boyega and Jodie Whittaker were interviewed on Channel 4′s T4 earlier in May this year about Attack the Block.

In this cheesy five minute cut of the interview, Joe Cornish talks about the soreness in his genitals and Jodie Whittaker is accused of having been obducted by aliens. Thanks to Youtube user MrsFiddle (AuntiNubbins?) for uploading the video.

Attack the Block in Los Angeles and Austin

While Attack the Block is leaving more and more cinemas in the UK sadly, great news about Attack the Block screenings in the US showed up this week.

Attack the Block will be screened in Austin at the Alamo on June 15th at 7pm and at the L.A Film Festival on June 22nd at 8pm.  I’m not sure if there are any tickets left for the screenings, but more information is available at the links below.

The future of Adam and Joe is still not looking good

In an earlier post I’ve talked about how Joe Cornish is unsure about the future of Adam and Joe.

Now, from reading an interview in DYI from earlier in May this year, it seems like Adam Buxton feels the same way. Cornish’s success as a writer and director might be the end of his success as a comedian and presenter.

What’s next once this stint of Adam and Joe finishes?
I don’t know man; I hope we can do more. We’re playing it by ear, but it doesn’t look that good. It’s getting harder and harder to meet our schedules. Joe’s film schedule means he’s unavailable for long periods of time. I’m always around and he isn’t, so it gets a bit unworkable. For me, there are always fingers in the pie, but so far I’ve not plucked out any plums. BUG is working great, so I’m going to do more. It’s really fun, but I admit I do miss Joe.

Q&A with Joe Cornish in Brixton

Here is a great a Q&A session with Joe Cornish from an exclusive screening of Attack the Block at Ritzy in Brixton organized by See Films Differently which took place on May 6th 2011.

One of the questions asked by the audience was what inspired the design of the hairy sharp toothed aliens in Attack the Block. Joe Cornish answered by saying that he combined elements from the monsters in the video game Another World, the wolf in the movie 300 and the animals in Ralph Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings film.

Pictures from the screening are available here.

Adam and Joe podcast (28th May 2011)

Just a reminder for those who have forgotten. Adam and Joe release a podcast after every show on BBC 6 Music on Saturday mornings.

If you listen all the way to the very end of this weeks podcast you’ll hear Joe Cornish saying that he is planning to make Adam Buxton the famous actor he deserves to be.

(talking about the success of American comedian/actor Zach Galifianakis)
Adam: Sometimes I get envious of him because I think “Ah, damn it!”.
Joe: That could have been you.
Adam: That could have been me.
Joe: That could have been Buckules.
Adam: A little porky guy with a big beard and not that much acting skills, but he’s got more acting skills than Buckles does…
Joe: Hey! You just haven’t had a chance to struck your stuff yet.
Adam: …yeah, thanks to you…
Joe: (laughing)
Adam: (laughing)
Joe: I’m building up to it man!
Adam: Yeah, yeah.
Joe: I am building up to it. I’m gonna launch Buckules out of a cannon into the world’s face at a thousand miles a hour when the time comes.
Adam: Alright, good.

Joe Cornish on how he was able to make Attack the Block

Joe Cornish talked to Pete Cooper on BBC Radio Northampton last monday about Attack the Block. Cooper asked an interesting question about how Cornish was given the opportunity to make the film despite never having made a feature film before, which Cornish answered like this.

“Well it was really a result of the relationships I have built up over the last ten or fifteen years working in television.
So I obviously had a relationship with Channel 4, because I’ve made my tv shows for them, and therefor had a relationship with Film 4. I also was lucky enough to know Edgar Wright who I’d met because Spaced was on at the same time as the Adam and Joe Show was on. And we’ve known each other for ten years, and he was involved with this company called Big Talk that made Scott Pilgrim [vs. the World] and Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and Paul.
So it was really a result of just knowing people in building relationships for ten years…”

Thanks to AuntieNubbins the interview can be listened to here.

Attack the Block is closing in on cinemas in North America

25 advanced screenings of Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block took place in 25 cities around the US and Canada on May 25th a couple of days ago. The audience reception of the films was great according to the reviews and tweets I’ve seen so far.

A special twitter account (@ATBMovie) and Facebook page has been created for US audience, and a new twitter-hashtag called #blockhead has also been introduced.

Some reviews from North American critics:

Joe Cornish on the morals of Attack the Block

The Platform did a great interview with Joe Cornish and the cast of Attack the Block recently, and one of the topics raised in the interview was what the message of the Attack the Block is. Joe Cornish had the following to say about that.

“I wanted to start in a place where all these characters were separate in their own worlds, divided by all the stupid things that divide people, and put this crazy situation on top of them … and show that every human being is capable of being good or bad or indifferent.
And it doesn’t matter about race, color or creed. It’s about surcomstance, it’s about where you live. And it’s true that in the world, there is prejudice, there are better opportunities for some people than others. And I feel that this generation is a little bit moving beyond that now, and I wanted to try to show that maybe a bit.”
